Zunder toothpicks are the plastic-free alternative to chewing gum. Made from birch wood sourced from European forests, with a flavor that lasts about 15 minutes, and 80 pieces in a stainless steel box. They’ve been produced since 2015 in a small social enterprise workshop in Switzerland. Here are ten reasons why they’re a perfect fit for your pocket.

Chewing gum has a plastic problem

Most chewing gums are made from a base of synthetic polymers. That’s exactly why they stick to sidewalks instead of breaking down. A birchwood toothpick doesn’t have this problem. You chew it, throw it away—that’s it. No spitting it out, no little piece of paper you have to carry around with you for two hours.

The flavor comes from the wood, not from a sugary mixture. The flavors last about 15 minutes, and the toothpicks are virtually calorie-free. The fruity varieties—Berry and Tropic—contain stevia extract, while the Mint and Apple varieties contain no sweeteners.

Ten Reasons to Choose Flavored Toothpicks

  1. Plastic-free. Birch wood instead of synthetic chewing material.

  2. The wood comes from European forests, not from overseas.

  3. Made in Switzerland, in a small social workshop since 2015.

  4. Virtually calorie-free, even the sweetened varieties.

  5. The flavor lasts about 15 minutes—roughly as long as a piece of gum.

  6. Seven flavors, ranging from Menthol to Tropic.

  7. The stainless steel container is hygienic and can be refilled.

  8. Refill bags save you from having to use new packaging every time.

  9. 80 pieces per box—that’s enough to last over a month if you have two a day.

  10. As a party favor or small gift, this box works better than any pack of gum.

    Which flavor suits you best?

The most obvious flavor is Mint, made with natural mint, which has a fresh and mellow finish. If you prefer something cooler, go for Menthol. Cinnamon goes in the opposite direction—warm and spicy—and is the flavor that divides opinion.

For something fruity, there is Apple, sweet with a tangy edge, as well as Lime, Berry, and Tropic. The latter combines pineapple, peach, banana, and guava. Berry and Tropic are sweetened with stevia extract; if you’d rather avoid that, stick with Mint, Menthol, or Apple.

Buy a box, refill the bag

Each variety comes in a stainless steel box containing 80 toothpicks. The box is the durable part—it lasts. Refills come in a refill bag that you simply pour into the existing box. This reduces packaging and is cheaper than buying a new box every time.

Regarding shelf life: unopened, the toothpicks last four months. Once opened, you should use them up within a month; after that, the flavor noticeably fades. A box of 80 is therefore not intended to be a year’s supply.
