The AEON features two leads with very different characteristics. The Eternal lead is made of a non-toxic metal alloy. When writing, a microscopic amount of material is released and remains on the paper; the line is lighter and harder than that of an HB pencil, roughly equivalent to a 2H. It wears down so slowly that most people never replace it.
The graphite lead is made of real graphite, available in HB or 2B. It writes more smoothly and produces a darker line, and it can create shading effects that the Eternal lead cannot achieve. However, it wears down more quickly. It should be sharpened with fine-grit sandpaper; a pencil sharpener would not work here.
If you’re sketching and drawing technical diagrams, you’ll get better results with Eternal: consistently fine lines, no smudging in your pocket. If you’re drawing and working with tonal values, you need Graphite. And since switching between them takes two seconds, it’s not an either/or question, but a matter of what’s currently on the table.
27 grams or 47 grams—that makes a difference in writing
The AEON pencil is available in several metals, and weight is not a side effect but rather the deciding factor. The aluminum version weighs 27 grams and feels light in the hand without seeming cheap. The titanium version weighs 47 grams. This makes the pen glide more smoothly and feel more substantial on the paper, which is noticeable during extended writing sessions. The brass version, at 75 grams, is significantly heavier still.
Titanium has two additional advantages: It does not corrode, not even from sweat, and it shows fewer signs of wear than aluminum. There are three finishes to choose from. Matte Titanium showcases the material in its pure form with a gray sheen; Polished Titanium is reflective; and Titanium DLC features a jet-black diamond-like carbon coating—one of the hardest coatings technically possible.
