Yamazaki: from ironing board to storage system, the TOWER, TOSCA and RIN series explained
Yamazaki is a Japanese maker of home organization products that started more than a hundred years ago as a small family business making ironing boards. Today, with offices in Nara and Tokyo, New York and Düsseldorf, it designs thousands of products for the kitchen, bathroom, entryway and desk. Three series carry the range: TOWER in powder-coated steel in black or white, TOSCA in white steel with light wood, and RIN with dark wood accents. At One Horizon we carry 120 Yamazaki products, from the wall clock to the spice rack and the bike stand, all available. This article covers what defines the brand, how the series differ and which piece belongs where. The full range: Yamazaki brand page.
From ironing board to storage system
According to Yamazaki, the company began more than a century ago as a small, family-run maker of ironing boards in Japan. Ironing boards are a good foundation for everything that came after: they have to be sturdy, take up little space and fold away. Those three requirements still stand behind every product today. In Japan the company is a household name; the design team works in-house and launches hundreds of new products every year, from the leaning ladder coat rack to the dish rack.
Yamazaki sums up its mission briefly: design household items that save space and simplify everyday life, because even small changes in a home have a big effect on routines. The background is life in Japanese cities, where every square centimeter counts. A dish rack that fits over the sink, a shoe rack that grows upward instead of outward, a coat stand that fits into a corner. None of it is spectacular. All of it solves a problem you have every day.
TOWER, TOSCA, RIN: the three series
TOWER is the largest series and the one people know best: powder-coated steel in black or white, clean edges, often with a wooden handle or a wooden shelf as the only accent. Almost everything in the Yamazaki range at One Horizon carries this name, from the three-tier spice rack and the under-sink organizer to the CORNER coat stand for a corner of the room, 48.5 × 31.5 × 160 cm at 1.5 kg.
According to Yamazaki, TOSCA is its best-selling storage series: warm white steel combined with light natural wood. It suits Scandinavian-style kitchens and is the calm alternative to the minimalist TOWER line. At One Horizon, for example, as the TOSCA kitchen shelf at 60 × 22.5 × 22 cm, as a dish rack with drip tray and wooden handles, or as a side table with a wooden top and a magazine compartment.
RIN relies on wood as its main material and, according to Yamazaki, brings natural elements into the room. The RIN wall coat rack is a wooden frame with five metal hooks you can slide freely, and the RIN wall clock has a wooden dial whose grain is different on every clock. Then there are smaller series such as FRAME, PLAIN, BRANCH, LINE, NEST, BRICK and SMART that cover individual product types, for example the FRAME side table or the BRANCH coat stand.

What Yamazaki does differently from a furniture store
The range is organized by problem, not by type of furniture. There is no Yamazaki cabinet, but there is an organizer for the space under the sink, a shelf that fits inside the sink cabinet, a holder for pot lids, a stand for dumbbells and a record shelf on casters. Each piece takes on a specific spot in the home where clutter usually builds up. At One Horizon that adds up to more than 120 such spots, sorted into kitchen, storage, coat racks, side tables and desk, for example the TOWER magnetic board for notes next to your monitor.
The second quirk: almost everything works without drilling. The shelves stand, clamp, hang on a cabinet door or lean against the wall. If you rent or have tiles that won’t take holes, you’ll find most of the solutions here. And the weight is deliberately low: the TOSCA kitchen shelf weighs 1.85 kg, the dish rack 2.5 kg, the CORNER coat stand 1.5 kg. You rearrange things without calling anyone for help.

Frequently asked questions about Yamazaki
From Japan. According to Yamazaki, it started more than a hundred years ago as a small family business making ironing boards and is a household name there today. Its locations are Nara and Tokyo in Japan, New York in the US and Düsseldorf for Europe, home of Yamazaki Europe GmbH.
TOWER is powder-coated steel in black or white with clean edges, the largest and best-known series. TOSCA combines white steel with light natural wood and feels warmer; according to Yamazaki, it is the best-selling storage series. Technically both solve the same problems, the difference is the look.
Usually not. Most of the range stands, clamps, hangs on cabinet doors or leans against the wall. Exceptions are wall products such as the RIN wall coat rack or the wall clock, which need to be mounted. Each product page says how the product is installed.
120 products, all available, from the spice rack to shoe racks, coat racks, laundry baskets and side tables, all the way to a bike stand, a dumbbell rack and a record shelf. Most belong to the TOWER series, plus TOSCA, RIN, FRAME, PLAIN, BRANCH, LINE, NEST, BRICK and SMART.
Wipe the powder-coated steel with a damp cloth, without abrasive cleaners. Wipe wooden parts dry or slightly damp and don’t leave them standing wet. Empty the drip tray of the dish rack regularly.
TOSCA, because white steel and light wood pick up the base colors of Scandinavian rooms. If your wooden furniture is darker, go for RIN. TOWER in black suits graphic, modern interiors, and TOWER in white is the neutral all-rounder.
Order you don’t see
The best Yamazaki product is the one nobody notices after a week, because the spices are simply where you reach for them. How to sort out the kitchen, bathroom and entryway room by room is covered in our guide to organizing with Yamazaki. All products, series and rooms: Yamazaki at One Horizon.
