7clouds: Backpacks and Wallets Made from Recycled Tarps
7clouds makes bags from materials that have already served a purpose. The wallets are crafted from used tarps that are sourced, cleaned, and cut to size in Switzerland. The backpacks are made from recycled PET. Two types of materials, one principle: don’t use anything new when what’s already available is enough.
A used tarp is turned into a wallet
Tarpaulin is the material used to make truck tarps and covers: sturdy, waterproof, and built to withstand years of outdoor use. 7clouds collects used tarps in Switzerland, cleans them, and cuts them into pieces. What is then sewn into a wallet continues to bear the traces of its first life.
That also means: no two pieces are alike. The patina, color gradation, and minor signs of wear vary from piece to piece. If you’re expecting a flawlessly uniform product, you’ve come to the wrong place. If you want a one-of-a-kind piece, you’ve come to the right place.
On the inside, 7clouds uses vegetable-tanned leather certified to the Leather Working Group standard. The Melen 7.1 has seven card slots, two open pockets, a zippered coin pocket, and a bill compartment. Measuring 8 x 10 x 1.5 cm, the Keron 7.1 is the more compact option yet still features eight card slots. Both models include a built-in RFID protection layer that prevents cards from being scanned while inside the wallet.

The second material line: recycled PET
When it comes to backpacks, the situation is different. Tarpaulin is too heavy and too stiff for a backpack you carry every day. That’s why 7clouds uses RPET—polyester made from recycled PET bottles—for these products. In the Heloy 7.1, 95 percent of the material—including the outer fabric, lining, and fasteners—is made from RPET and is certified according to the Global Recycled Standard.
The weight speaks for itself. The Heloy has a capacity of 18.5 liters, fits laptops up to 15 inches, and weighs 970 grams. For commuting by bike, it features adjustable shoulder straps as well as a chest strap and a front strap. The Simse 7.1 is the smaller version, with a capacity of 9 liters and a weight of 520 grams; it features a waterproof outer material, two zippered front compartments, and three interior pockets.

What the abbreviations on the label mean
Sustainability is something you can claim. Certifications make it verifiable, so it’s worth taking a look at which ones 7clouds holds.
- LGW stands for Leather Working Group. The organization audits tanneries, assessing factors such as water consumption, chemical use, and the traceability of hides, among other things.
- BSCI stands for the Business Social Compliance Initiative. It audits working conditions at manufacturing facilities, ranging from working hours and wages to workplace safety.
- GRS stands for the Global Recycled Standard. It certifies the actual recycled content of a material and tracks it throughout the supply chain.
That’s more than most bag brands in this price range can offer. And that’s why the claim “95 percent GRS-certified” for Heloy is more than just a label—it’s a statement.
Frequently Asked Questions About 7clouds
What material are 7clouds wallets made of?
Made from tarpaulin—that is, used tarps—which are sourced, cleaned, and cut to size in Switzerland. The interior is made of vegetable-tanned leather that meets the Leather Working Group’s standards.
Are the bags really one-of-a-kind?
Yes. Since each tarp has its own unique patina and coloration, every piece is different. Color gradients and slight signs of wear are part of the product and do not constitute a defect.
What does RFID protection mean for a wallet?
The wallet has a built-in protective film that blocks contactless reading of credit and debit cards. This means your cards can’t be scanned while they’re still in your wallet.
Which 7clouds backpack is suitable for a 15-inch laptop?
The Heloy 7.1. It has a capacity of 18.5 liters, fits laptops up to 15 inches, and weighs 970 grams. The smaller Simse 7.1, with a capacity of 9 liters, is designed as a shopping bag and is not intended for laptops.
What are the backpacks made of?
Made from RPET, which is polyester made from recycled PET bottles. In the Heloy 7.1, 95 percent of the material is GRS-certified, including the lining and fasteners.
Why One-of-a-Kind Items Aren’t for Everyone
A product made from recycled materials comes with a trade-off you should be aware of: You won’t know exactly what yours will look like beforehand. The color combination is right, but the details vary. For some, that’s part of the charm; for others, it’s a nuisance. At 7clouds, that’s the whole point—and even the most rigorous certification can’t change that.
