Dishwashers use harsh detergents and high temperatures that damage the plastic and the coating, and they leave water spots that are nearly impossible to remove later. With the Tritan bottles, the transparency is compromised; with the stainless steel models, the satin powder coating is affected. The stainless steel lid of the Original bottles also bears a note on the manufacturer’s website stating that it must not be placed in the dishwasher.
The good news: Hand-washing takes less than two minutes. The opening on the stainless steel models measures 28 mm, so any bottle brush will fit through it. And because the bottle is flat, it dries faster on the drying rack than a round one, where water pools at the bottom.
The Three-Step Daily Cleansing Routine
According to Memobottle, a mixture of warm water and dish soap is sufficient for everyday use. Alternatively, use one part household vinegar to four parts water. Pour the mixture in, put the lid on, shake vigorously, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse it out. Done.
- Rinse with clean water after each use and refill with fresh water. This prevents buildup, especially from tea, juice, or flavored water.
- Rinse thoroughly once a week with dish soap or the vinegar solution, using a brush if necessary.
- Let it dry with the lid open and upside down. A closed, damp interior is the main cause of musty odors.
When it comes to brushes, the material makes all the difference. For the Tritan models, Memobottle recommends soft bristles to prevent scratching the interior and keep it clear. The stainless steel bottles can also handle a wire brush. Scouring powder and steel wool have no place on either type.
Getting Rid of Odors and Stains
If the bottle smells musty after spending the weekend in your backpack, a vinegar solution left to sit for a longer period of time will help. Mix one part vinegar with four parts warm water, let it sit for an hour, then rinse thoroughly. The vinegar smell will dissipate once it dries. Repeat for stubborn cases; do not increase the concentration.
For deep cleaning without scrubbing, Memobottle offers its own cleaning tablets. The dosage depends on the size: four tablets for the A5, three for the Slim, two for the A6, and one for the A7. The silicone gasket can be removed: carefully pry it out with a blunt, non-serrated tool such as a butter knife or teaspoon, wash it separately, let it dry, and reinsert it. If the seal doesn’t sit completely round in its groove after being reinserted, that’s the most common reason why a Memobottle suddenly starts leaking.

Tritan or Stainless Steel: Differences in Care
Both materials are straightforward, but not identical. Clear Tritan is BPA- and BPS-free and, according to the manufacturer, resistant to cracks, warping, and clouding. However, it scratches when cleaned with stiff brushes and shows discoloration because it is transparent. The 304 stainless steel does not show discoloration and can withstand a wire brush, but the powder coating on the outside should not come into contact with abrasive cleaners.
